Zinc has been known to be essential to life since , when it was shown to be required by Aspergillus niger, but not until the past 15 years has its role in human health and disease begun to are beginning to see that it has fundamental importance in many diseases through secondary or conditioned zinc deficiency. The metabolic role of zinc has been studied for many years, 1 but it was not until that Keilin and Mann offered the first concrete explanation of its mode of action. 2 They showed that the enzyme carbonic anhydrase contains % zinc as a part of its molecule and that zinc is essential to the elimination of carbon dioxide. Thus, zinc and iron have been shown to be components of two Cited by:
Zinc metabolism in infection. In: Brewer GJ, Prasad AS, eds. Zinc metabolism: current aspects in health and disease. New York: Alan R Liss, Zinc is essential for numerous aspects of health—including immunity, eye health, skin health, and more. It’s vital to get enough, but not too much. Excessive zinc can cause digestive upset and headaches. Over time it can cause low copper levels. Be sure to talk with your healthcare practitioner about the right dose for you.
